The WebOS-based Palm Pre was innovative last spring but has been bested by the new generation of Android devices. (Its sole U.S. carrier,moved on from the Pre, now focusing on Android devices.) The Motorola Droid's keyboard is unusable, and the lack of multitouch support in its included apps makes its few technical advantages over the HTC Droid Eris -- basically, a few extra security features -- a lousy bargain. The BlackBerry Storm 2 was supposed to fix an unusable clickable touchscreen in the original version, but the solution doesn't address the core issue: Tapping is very slow on the screen, to the point that sustained text entry is out of the question. It's not surprising that within weeks of its release, carriers are selling it as part of two-for-one specialsWindows Mobile and Nokia Symbian devices are also out of the picture. Microsoft's long-delayed Windows 7 Mobile remains vaporware, and making purchase decisions on Microsoft's promise is foolhardy. Nokia's Symbian OS has evolved slowly in the last decade and simply isn't in the same league as modern mobile OSes; Nokia knows that and has a plan to move -- over several years -- to a new OS called Maemo. Radeon HD 5970 'Hemlock' Card Specifications

AMD's next-generation, dual-GPU graphics cards, the much-anticipated Radeon HD 5970, codenamed Hemlock, is just around the corner, given the increasing number of leaked details that have recently surfaced the Internet. While we still aren't certain when the new card becomes available, with TSMC's 40nm production issues, there are rumors pointing to an official release before the end of this month. On that note, it looks like we now have some details on the card's clock speeds and technical specifications.

According to a recent news article, coming from the fellows over at Fudzilla, the Sunnyvale, California-based chip maker will launch the much-anticipated Radeon HD 5970 with a core speed of 725Mhz. In addition, 'Hemlock', which packs two RV870 GPUs, will be featured with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, clocked at 1000MHz, and with two 256-bit interfaces. That's pretty much what you get from AMD's Radeon HD 5850 card, but performance is increased thanks to the adoption of the dual-GPU configuration.

In addition to that, the upcoming card sports double the Stream processors and texture units of the Radeon HD 5870, for a total of 3200 Stream processors and 160 texture units. This is one of the key points where performance enhancements should be noticed. Unfortunately, Fudzilla wasn't able to get details on the card's power consumption, although it's most likely that this will be somewhere north of 300W.

All of this should be taken with a grain of salt, as the card is not yet official and frequency details and specifications could change when AMD officially debuts its new flagship. Still, expect Hemlock to provide support for ATI CrossFireX technology and the new ATI Eyefinity solution, as well as support for DirectX 11-enabled applications. In addition, it's expected that, with NVIDIA's Fermi-based cards nowhere to be seen, the new dual-GPU Radeon card will provide AMD with the performance crown for some time.

Linux Foundation Takes Training Online

In March, the ever-innovating Linux Foundation announced a new program aimed at bringing the brains behind Linux together with developers-to-be in order to supply the increasing need for Linux talent. Now the program is going online, with the first two courses set to call roll by mid-month.

The original sessions of the Linux Foundation Training Program, held at the annual Collaboration Summit, took the form of in-person, hands-on training, a method that provides students an unmatched learning opportunity, but limits the number of students the program can reach. The addition of online courses takes the program to the students, complementing the continued on-site courses offered at Linux Foundation events, local training sessions in select U.S. cities, and by request, specialized training for corporate developers.

The first two courses, drawn from the selection of available on-site offerings, will be Essential Linux Device Driver Development Skills and Linux Kernel Debugging and Performance. Though information on specific instructors was not immediately available, the program's faculty includes Foundation CTO Ted Ts'o, LWN founder Jonathan Corbet, UC-Berkley's Dr. Kevin Dankwardt, LF Technical Advisory Board member Christoph Hellwig, and software engineer Jon Loeliger.

Course outlines for both Essential Linux Device Driver Development Skills and Linux Kernel Debugging and Performance are available on the foundation's website. Interested students can register for the courses though the website, or request additional information.

In addition to expanding the LF Training Program, the foundation is also expanding its individual member program, offering a number of incentives, including discounts of up to 30% on Linux Foundation events, the obligatory weekly newsletter, and one of three foundation t-shirts. Zmanda Recovery Manager 3.0 for MySQL on Ubuntu Server

As a bellwether example, Wikipedia has switched its 400 servers to Ubuntu.

MySQL is equally gaining in importance to the enterprise. This same Wikipedia is also powered by MySQL. Acquired by Sun in late 2007, MySQL has been propelled further and further into the big leagues. As larger enterprises adopt Ubuntu together with MySQL, the need for a robust, well integrated database backup solution only grows.

To meet the widest possible range of backup solution requirements, Zmanda offers three versions of ZRM for MySQL on Ubuntu: the ZRM Enterprise edition, the ZRM Cluster edition and a ZRM Community edition. Asus Launches the Very First AMD AM2+ Mainboards

ASUSTeK Computer, better known as Asus, has just announced the release of a line of mainboards aimed at the upcoming next generation of AMD processors which will use the AM2+ socket. The new generation of Asus mainboards comes after a long collaboration with the central processing units manufacturer AMD in order to offer users the best possible experience, performance
and stability.

As we have strived to be number one in providing the best quality, service and innovation to customers, ASUS gives the world the first motherboard, the M2A-VM, which is compatible with the latest AMD AM2+ CPU." said Joe Hsieh, ASUS Vice President of motherboard business department, who was cited in the company's press release concerning the new product family. Even if AMD processors to support and use the new AM2+ socket are not readily available on the market, because the two sockets AM2 and AM2+ are compatible, the new Asus mainboards can accommodate all AMD CPUs which are using the older socket: AMD Athlon64, Athlon64 FX, Athlon64 X2 and Sempron.

The M2A-VM is the first Asus mainboard from the new generation and it is centered around the AMD 690 northbridge and the ATI SB 600 southbrigde, supporting AMD's specific data transfer method, the HyperTransport with speed of 1600 or 2000MT/s. At the random access memory department, the new Asus mainboard comes equipped with 4 slots for DDR2 memory modules offering support for 8Gb of RAM running at a maximum frequency of 800MHz. As an entry level mainboard, the M2A-VM comes with an integrated graphics solution based on the ATI Radeon X1250 graphics processing unit.

Apart from the entry level model it is rumored that all the Asus AM2+ mainboards will support multi graphics cards setups like Nvidia SLI and ATI CrossFire as well as a variable number of Serial and Parallel ATA ports, while for external storage connectivity eSATA ports will be available. From the M2A-VM and upward, all mainboards will support RAID disk configurations with the following setups: RAID 0, RAID 1,RAID10. Portal Games for Linux was founded in the year 2001 by Juraj Michálek from Slovakia. There were only small number of games for Linux spreaded over Internet. When someone wants to play these games he had to download all libraries and recomplie game. It was hard to download and racompile game because a lot of web-links were broken and source files were sometimes inaccessible. So running games required a lot of effort. The basic idea of the portal Games for Linux was to collect game's tarballs and all libraries required by games and put them in to one place.[free download]

The second idea of this portal was - provide porting skills to Linux newbies and help them to port their games from Dos, Windows or other OS to Linux (and also backward to Windows).

A lot of work has been done. :-) Now you can enjoy Linux games. In future we are planning to build rpm and other binary packages to each game. Games are now available only in source tarball.

Elive 1.9.24

Pada 27 Maret 2009, tim Elive telah memgumumkan rilis pengembangan dari Live CD GNU/Linux mereka, yaitu Elive 1.9.24. Diantara perkembangan dan perbaikan bug yang dilakukan, perubahan besar yang terjadi pada versi pengembangan kali ini sekarang dibuat berdasarkan versi stabil dari Debian 5.0 (Lenny). Hal lainnya pada rilis ini adalah adanya tambahan dukungan filesystem Resiser4 yang hanya tersedia sebagai modul kernel, Scite, sebagai default text editor, kemampuan untuk preview video FLV di Thunar , tambahan LVM dan RAID di installer, bahasa yang dapat dipilih ketika menggunakan unetbootin dan sebagainya.

Sejumlah perbaikan yang dilakukan di antaranya, kernel header dari rilis sebelumnya, perbaikan bugs installer, perbaikan pada pesan pop-up di MPlayer dan beberapa perbaikan lainnya.

New Ubuntu 9.04 Release

The Release Candidate version of the upcoming Ubuntu 9.04 (codename Jaunty Jackalope) was uploaded a few minutes ago on the official mirrors. As usual, we've downloaded a copy of it in order to keep you up to date with the latest changes in the Ubuntu 9.04 development.

What's new in Ubuntu/Kubuntu 9.04 RC? Well, not much has changed since the Beta release, only various software updates and many bugfixes. We also decided not to publish any more screenshots, as nothing has changed on the artwork part, and you already know from previous screenshot tours how Ubuntu 9.04 will look. This Release Candidate has the brand new GNOME 2.26.1 desktop environment, which brings lots of fixes and a few improvements.

There is also good news for Wacom tablet users, as these devices will be automatically recognized and enabled. However, the configuration for button mapping isn't supported at the moment (it can be set only manually if the user adds an fdi file in /etc/ha/fdi/policy). The kernel packages were updated to version 2.6.28-11.14, based on Linux kernel 2.6.28.9.

On the other hand, Kubuntu 9.04 RC (Jaunty Jackalope) is built on top of the KDE 4.2.2 desktop environment.

Once again, a Live CD is available for everyone who wants to see for themselves what's new in Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu 9.04 RC (see below for download links), without installing anything on the hard drive. Latest ATI Linux Driver Introduces Support for Ubuntu 9.04

And Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3

Yet another stable version of the ATI/AMD Linux display driver was released last night, for both x86 and x86_64 architectures. With version 9.4, ATI Catalyst introduces early support for the upcoming Ubuntu 9.04 operating system and full support for the recently released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3. Users of the Release Candidate of Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) can install and test this new ATI driver via the "Hardware Drivers" utility in the System -> Administration menu. Without further introduction, we invite you to take a look at the resolved issues of the new ATI Catalyst 9.4 video driver from AMD:

Fixed a segmentation fault issue when X was stopped in dual-head mode;
· Fixed indirect rendering in Novel's SUSE Enterprise 10.1;
· When 3D programs are running, errors will no longer be reported in dmesg;
· Fixed video playback issues, that caused the system to freeze, when resuming from S3/S4;
· Repaired the default button for Warning Dialogue in the preferences of the Catalyst Control Center;
· Improved gamma values in the Catalyst Control Center;
· The HDTV Support page of the Catalyst Control Center correctly displays the formats now.

· X.Org 6.8, 6.9, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 or 7.4

Pengumuman tentang akhir hayat Ubuntu 7.10 ( Gutsy Gibbon), Clement Lefebvre telah mengumumkan kalau Daryna yang merupkan codename dari Linux Mint 4.0 tidak lagi menerima update software dan sejumlah perbaikan lainnya. Hal ini akan dimulai pada 18 April 2009, sebelum itu semua pengguna Linux Mint 4.0 diharapkan untuk berpindah ke Linux Mint 5.0 (Elyssa) dengan Long Term Support atau LInux Mint terbaru 6.0 dengan code name Felicia. Linux Mint 4.0 dibuat berdasarkan pada sistem operasi dan repository Ubuntu 7.10.
Linux Mint 4.0 membawa banyak teknologi dan aplikasi Linux kernel 2.6.22, GNOME 2.20, OpenOffice 2.3.0, Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.
