download Ubuntu netbook remix 10.04 LTS

Ubuntu for Netbooks!

Ubuntu Netbook Remix is a 'remix' of the standard Ubuntu Desktop release to enable it to work better on devices with small screens, such as Netbooks (sub-notebooks).

Ubuntu Netbook Remix is optimised to run on a new category of affordable Internet-centric devices called netbooks. It includes a new consumer-friendly interface that allows users to quickly and easily get on-line and use their favourite applications. This interface is optimised for a retail sales environment.
Canonical has collaborated with Intel and is working with a number of OEM's to deliver Ubuntu on netbooks in retail. In keeping with the philosophy of our best work being available to everyone, the core remix product is available to all through the Canonical repositories. This version is free to download and modify by any user.

What is a remix?

A remix is a 'respun' version of Ubuntu built for a specific purpose. Although Canonical has encouraged community projects to use this terminology for some time, this is the first time that Canonical has used it. We are using it to differentiate from an 'Edition' which we consider a complete version with daily builds suitable for the average user with no additional work beyond installing the CD. To use the Ubuntu Netbook Remix you need to install packages on top of an existing Ubuntu installation and you may have some compatibility issues depending on your hardware profile. For now we recommend it only for experienced Linux users or commercial OEMs and ODMs engage with Canonical for support and service offerings.

In addition to the Ubuntu Netbook Remix there will be pre-installed remixes made available on manufacturer's machines. These will contain software that is not free and built for specific hardware profiles unique to the OEM. These will not be publicly available as we do not have the right to redistribute the software.

All of the initial Ubuntu Netbook remixes combine optimisations from the Moblin project for Intel® AtomTM processors and it is specially designed for netbooks. Intel and Canonical are working to create a new computing experience across a rapidly expanding category of portable devices.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition

Long-term support (LTS) version of popular desktop operating system generally available on 29 April.
LONDON, April 27, 2010: Canonical announced today the upcoming release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition, the latest version of the popular Linux desktop distribution, which includes three years of support through free security and maintenance updates. It will be available for free download on Thursday 29 April and will be pre-installed on a range of machines from a number of manufacturers in Summer 2010.

The desktop edition of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS will feature extensive design work, faster boot speed, social network integration, online services and the Ubuntu One Music Store.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS challenges the perceptions of the Linux desktop, bringing a whole new category of users to the world of Ubuntu," said Jane Silber, CEO, Canonical. "Changes like the new look and feel and the addition of a music store, layered on top of our relentless focus on delivering an intuitive and attractive user experience for new and existing Ubuntu users -- these are the bridging elements to the mainstream market that our community, our partners and our users really want. Long-term support makes Ubuntu 10.04 LTS very attractive to corporate IT as well."

New in 10.04 LTS:

*

Boot speed: Noticeably quicker on almost any machine and super-fast on SSD-based machines such as netbooks, which means users can speed straight to the browser for fast web access.
*

Social from the start: The new 'Me Menu' in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS consolidates the process of accessing and updating social networks including Facebook, Digg, Twitter and Identi.ca. The Me Menu also integrates chat channels so users can talk with friends or colleagues on Google Talk, MSN, IRC and nearly every network.
*

Ubuntu One: Enhanced desktop integration for the online service means files and folders can be shared and saved on the cloud more easily. Bookmark and contacts sharing has been added, speeding the move from personal computer to personal computing.
*

Ubuntu One Music Store: Music from the world's largest labels and greatest bands available direct to Ubuntu users through the default music player. Purchase tracks, store in Ubuntu One and share DRM-free music from one location across multiple computers and devices.
*

Ubuntu Software Centre 2.0: An easy way to find new software, and keep track of it once it's installed in a new, sleeker interface. Users can also single out software provided by Ubuntu, by Canonical partners or by developers who use Canonical's Launchpad Personal Package Archive (PPA) hosting service.
*

Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition (UNE): As well as benefiting from the improvements in the Desktop Edition, netbook users will see even faster boot speeds on SSD-based devices, faster suspend/resume that will extend battery life - and the industry-leading interface for these smaller screens.

New Ubuntu 9.04 Release

Free to download Desktop i386 (ISO) and Desktop amd64 (ISO)

The Release Candidate version of the upcoming Ubuntu 9.04 (codename Jaunty Jackalope) was uploaded a few minutes ago on the official mirrors. As usual, we've downloaded a copy of it in order to keep you up to date with the latest changes in the Ubuntu 9.04 development.

What's new in Ubuntu/Kubuntu 9.04 RC? Well, not much has changed since the Beta release, only various software updates and many bugfixes. We also decided not to publish any more screenshots, as nothing has changed on the artwork part, and you already know from previous screenshot tours how Ubuntu 9.04 will look. This Release Candidate has the brand new GNOME 2.26.1 desktop environment, which brings lots of fixes and a few improvements.

There is also good news for Wacom tablet users, as these devices will be automatically recognized and enabled. However, the configuration for button mapping isn't supported at the moment (it can be set only manually if the user adds an fdi file in /etc/ha/fdi/policy). The kernel packages were updated to version 2.6.28-11.14, based on Linux kernel 2.6.28.9.

On the other hand, Kubuntu 9.04 RC (Jaunty Jackalope) is built on top of the KDE 4.2.2 desktop environment.

Once again, a Live CD is available for everyone who wants to see for themselves what's new in Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu 9.04 RC (see below for download links), without installing anything on the hard drive. See you again on April 23rd for the final release of the Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) when we will showcase, once again, all its new features!

Instalasi OpenSUSE Menggunakan CD/DVD

Download Zencafe 1.4
Panduan cara install Zencafe, format file pdf download disini

Kebutuhan hardware:
Prosesor :pentium III
Harddisk : 2GB
Memori :256MB

How to Install Mandriva Linux

By David Secor,

Things You’ll Need:

* Mandriva ISO image
* CD burner
* Blank CD
* Free hard disk spac

Over the last several years, many Linux developers have worked diligently to make a desktop version of Linux that is as easy to use as competing operating systems. Mandriva Linux is one of the distributions that is aimed at the novice computer user, though it also includes features that those with more experience will enjoy. Like most Linux distributions, Mandriva is free to download, and with the Live CD version called Mandriva One, you can even try the operating system out before committing to a full installation.

Instructions

STEP 1

Download the latest version of Mandriva One from Mandriva’s home page. If a broadband connection is not available, the Mandriva store also has CDs available to order.

STEP 2

Burn the Mandriva One image to disc. The image is in the standard ISO format, which can be easily burned to CD with most CD burning software or with one of the many freeware ISO utilities available on the internet.

STEP 3

Backup any important files that are located on the target machine. There is always a small chance that something could go wrong while installing an operating system, so it pays to have such files in a safe place.

STEP 4

Insert the Mandriva CD, and reboot the machine. Many computers are set to automatically boot from the CD-Rom Drive, if a bootable disc is inserted. Should the computer not boot the Mandriva CD, it will be necessary to enter the BIOS of the computer, and change the boot priority, so that the CD boots before the hard drive. This can be done by pressing a special key, usually “DEL,” “F2,” or “F12,” just after the machine starts.

STEP 5

Press “Enter” when the CD offers the option of booting Mandriva. After a minute, the desktop will appear, and the software will ask you to choose your language and the country you reside in. Then it will ask you to accept the license agreement, choose the keyboard layout, and it will ask you how to set the clock. Most users can leave the clock set at the default option, which is “Local Time.” Finally, the software will ask if you would like to use 3D effects on your desktop. For compatibility reasons, it is best to leave the default option of no effects, and they can be turned on later, if desired. In a moment, the Mandriva desktop will appear, and you can explore the interface and use the software before starting the install process.

STEP 6

Double-click the icon labeled “Live Install.” Click the “Next” button on the welcome screen. The Drak partition wizard will be started, and it will scan your hard drive to determine the best installation options.

STEP 7

Choose how you would like to partition the drive. If you will be using only Mandriva, and your files are backed up, you can select the option labeled “Erase and Use Entire Disk.” If you will be booting Windows in addition to Mandriva, you could use the option to resize the Windows partition. In addition, you can choose to make the partitions yourself, by selecting the “Custom” option, though this should only be used by experienced computer users. After choosing the partition options, the installation will begin. It will take several minutes to an hour to complete. At the end, it will display a configuration window for the boot loader.

STEP 8

Select which boot loader to use, and to which partition it should be installed. In most cases, the default options can be used, because Mandriva typically finds the correct configuration without user input. Click the “Next” button, and then the “Finish” button in the next window.

STEP 9

Reboot the computer by selecting “Log Off” and then “Restart” from the Menu at the bottom left of the screen. After a few moments, the software will ask you to remove the CD and press “Enter.” Mandriva will then be run for the first time. Answer the questions about your internet connection, choose an administrator password, and select a user name. Log on by typing your user name and password, followed by the “Enter” key. Once the desktop comes up, the installation of Mandriva Linux is completed.

You change the username and password, but i suggest use default username & password.thanks.

More about Linux distributions

With so many different distributions or 'flavors' of the Linux operating system, it can be difficult to choose which is right for you. Each distribution is unique, and has it's own strengths and weaknesses. In this section we will briefly describe a selection of the more popular Linux distributions.

Desktop

Usually a traditional desktop installation with graphical interface and common applications. Great for home use, on a laptop or as a workstation.

Server/Enterprise

Don't let the word enterprise scare you away from these releases. Most often used in a production environment and business, a server/enterprise edition can still be used on a home server or project. Quite often these versions are not free and come with a hefty price tag to justify the support contract.

Live cd

A live CD (or liveCD) is an operating system (usually containing other software as well) stored on a bootable storing device, so the computer can be booted without using the hard drive and without installing into permanent memory. The operating system runs directly from the storing device. Often the operating system is installed on a USB stick, a CD or a DVD. Perfect if you're interested in just trying out Linux without actually installing to your hard drive.

Debian

Debian GNU/Linux is a free distribution of the Linux based operating system. It is maintained and updated through the work of many users who volunteer their time and effort. Along with its large selection of prepackaged software is contains advanced package management tools that allow for easy installation and maintenance on individual systems and workstation clusters. Extensive pre-release testing is done to ensure the highest degree of reliability possible, and a publicly accessible bug tracking system provides an easy way to monitor customer feedback. This has made Debian one of the most popular distributions.

Fedora

Fedora is a set of projects, sponsored by Red Hat and guided by the Fedora Project Board. These projects are developed by a large community of people who strive to provide and maintain the very best in free, open source software and standards. Fedora Core, the central Fedora project, is an operating system and platform, based on Linux, that is always free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute, now and forever.

Gento

Gentoo Linux is a versatile and fast, completely free Linux distribution for x86, PowerPC, Sparc and Sparc64 that's geared towards Linux power users. Unlike other distros, Gentoo Linux has an advanced package management system called Portage. Portage is a true ports system in the tradition of BSD ports, but is Python-based and sports a number of advanced features including dependencies, fine-grained package management, "fake" (OpenBSD-style) installs, path sandboxing, safe unmerging, system profiles, virtual packages, config file management, and more.

Knoppix

Knoppix is a bootable Live system on CD or DVD, consisting of a representative collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a productive Linux system for the desktop, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos.

Mandriva

Mandriva, formerly known as Mandrakesoft, is the publisher of the popular Mandriva Linux operating system, one of the most full-featured and easy to use Linux systems. The company offers its enterprise, government, and educational customers a complete range of GNU/Linux and Open Source software and related services. Mandriva products are available in more than 120 countries.

Red Hat

Red Hat has a family of Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscriptions that address server and client operating environments. The Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS and Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES variants are for high-end and entry-level servers. The Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS variant is for technical workstations. Red Hat Desktop is the newest Red Hat Enterprise Linux family member and is designed for the general purpose desktop user.

Slackware

Since its first release in April of 1993, the Slackware Linux Project has aimed at producing the most "UNIX-like" Linux distribution out there. Slackware complies with the published Linux standards, such as the Linux File System Standard. The project has always considered simplicity and stability paramount, and as a result Slackware has become one of the most popular, stable, and friendly distributions available.

Suse

Whether you're new to Linux or you use it daily, SUSE Linux 10.1 delivers the features you need most for home computing and networking. SUSE Linux also includes more than 1,000 of the world's leading open source applications. From established solutions like Firefox and OpenOffice.org to emerging technologies like Beagle and Xen, these applications are a real value. You simply open the box, run the installation program and start using Linux for everything you do. Choose the default set of applications to get a great desktop or customize your entire computing environment. It's truly that easy. SUSE Linux has both a Desktop and Enterprise release.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a free, open source operating system that starts with the breadth of Debian and adds regular releases (every six months), a clear focus on the user and usability (it should "Just Work", TM) and a commitment to security updates with 18 months of support for every release. Ubuntu ships with the latest Gnome release as well as a selection of server and desktop software that makes for a comfortable desktop experience off a single installation CD.

Minimal openSUSE 11.1 install

Installation
openSUSE 11.1 is Out - Get it Now!free download

Boot to the DVD and choose to install from the menu. You can press F2 and select an alternate language if required. The system will boot straight into the installer, where you should begin your 'New Installation'. I chose to use the automatic configuration option and proceeded to set my time zone. At the 'Desktop Selection' screen hit the 'Other' button and choose either 'Minimal X Window', or 'Minimal

Server Selection (Text Mode)'. The first option will install the base system, plus the X Window server and the basic desktop environment, Tab Window Manager (TWM). If you want less control then take this one, but if you want more, then take the second text-mode option.

openSUSE 11.1 installer - choosing a desktop

Partition your hard drives however you desire - I like to turn off access time and so select 'No access time' on a per-partition basis. Create a user (I turn off automatic login), complete the rest of the setup procedure and begin the install. If you took the second option, then at the summary screen ensure you change the default run level from 3 to 5 (full multi-user with network and display manager). This entire install process took only 6 minutes to complete and a further 2 minutes to configure the system on first boot. If you took the first option, then by default it will boot straight to the X Window desktop manager and the basic TWM desktop. You can log into this environment as root or switch to a terminal if you prefer. Unlike Ubuntu, the base openSUSE system includes a fully functional splash screen and includes many services, such as D-Bus, HAL, Firewall, CPUFreq, NFS, CUPS, OpenSSH and Postfix out of the box. It also includes YaST and all the modules for configuring your system. Next we can begin to tweak the system.

Base system

Now that you have a basic X Window system installed (if you don't yet, you will shortly), we can use the Internet to download the latest packages. Any packages that have been updated since the initial release will be installed from the Internet, while anything else will be installed from the local DVD. By default the openSUSE installer will have configured your repositories for you; however, you can use a custom mirror if you like. To accomplish this, I use Zypper, openSUSE's powerful RPM package management tool.

Reboot your computer and you should be greeted with the openSUSE GNOME Desktop Manager. Log in as the user you set up during installation and it should load the GNOME desktop.

Now that you have a fully functioning GNOME environment, you can continue to install any other applications you require and tweak your system further. The pattern we used has pulled in many of the basic packages we need, including a web browser, email and calendar program, chat client, CD burner and an image viewer. If you didn't use the pattern, then you'll need to install the packages you want manually. There are many other ways to tweak your system further of course, now that it is installed. Try disabling unused services, removing programs you don't need and introducing some package locks.

This new custom openSUSE system boots from GRUB to login screen in around 28 seconds, taking a further 6 seconds to load the GNOME desktop. It is using up 175 MB of memory once fully logged in and just over 1.7 GB of hard drive space. Compare this to the default install, which takes 39 seconds to boot and over 10 seconds to load the desktop, while using up 3.6 GB of hard drive space and over 315 MB of me

Conclusion

If you want a really light weight environment then openSUSE might not be the way to go, but if it's your favourite operating system, you don't have to give it up just yet! You can tweak the system to make it quite small, especially with the help of Zypper and its ability to lock packages. At the very least, you will learn some more about how your openSUSE system works and, if at the end you decide to just install everything, well, you can do that too!

Distro Zenwalk 5.0 - 32 bit

free download Live cd

Here is another distro for you to know, Zenwalk 5.0 32 bit.(formerly Minislack), or Zenwalk Linux,
is a GNU/Linux distribution founded by Jean-Philippe Guillemin.

It was originally based on Slackware. Since its creation, the distribution has become very different from Slackware in most regards
while still maintaining compatibility with its binary packages.
Zenwalk aims to be a multi-purpose Linux distribution by focusing on Internet applications, multimedia and programming tools.

Additionally, Zenwalk comes with many specialized tools, designed for beginner through advanced users as it offers system configuration
via both graphical and command-line operations.

Jean-Philippe Guillemin, also known as "Hyperion" or "JP"
is the creator and main contributor to Zenwalk Linux.

He earned a degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Nantes, and is now working for Telindus, a group of companies offering ICT Solutions and Services, as Project Manager and Security Engineer.

Jean-Philippe also developed several projects like Snorter Snorter, a reporting frontend for the Snort Intrusion detection system, and some system administration tools for the Linux operating system (Netpkg software package manager, Xnetconf network configuration tool between others).

Zenwalk was originally called Minislack up to version 1.1, taking its current name with version 1.2 released 2005-08-12.
A key difference from Slackware is the use of a Linux 2.6 series kernel by default, where Slackware uses a 2.4 series kernel as of version 11.0.
Originally using KDE as its desktop environment, Zenwalk now uses Xfce as of version 0.3, although GNOME and KDE packages
have always been available separately.

The Zenwalk Project aims to create a lightweight Linux operating system through the incorporation of the latest software available for a stable release (though using only one application per task on the release ISO image), optimization for a specific processor architecture to increase execution speed, and introduces a comprehensive package management
system with dependency resolution.

The Zenwalk Project has a forum that allows users and developers
alike to post their issues, concerns and praise.

The part of the community that is involved in testing new software packages is closely listened to by the project developers.

The newest official software packages are published in the -snapshot tree.
When sufficient testing and debugging have been completed, a package is moved to the -current tree, where most users can download
software to update their systems.

Zenwalk uses the netpkg package management tool.
It is developed in-house, and it provides the main functionalities of the apt-get variety of package managers. It uses Slackware's .tgz package format, but adds dependency resolution capabilities.

The system uses meta files to provide dependency information, as well as package description during the install process.
This convenience is only available to the official Zenwalk mirrors listed in the netpkg configuration file, netpkg.conf.
In addition to the original netpkg command line interface,
xnetpkg provides a GUI frontend with similar capabilities.
Packages available in the Zenwalk mirrors aim to stay true to the project's philosophy of using one application per task, but allow for customization of the end-user's system by offering more variety.

Additionally, Zenwalk is compatible with Slackware package management tools such as slapt-get and its frontends, and have
similar functionality as that of netpkg.

As of Zenwalk 4.6, package compatibility with Slackware is still maintained.
Slackware packages may be used to substitute
Zenwalk packages where necessary.
Additional package availability can be found at LinuxPackages.net.

Zenwalk Linux is built and optimized primarily for the i686 architecture, although it supports i486 computers as well.

kubuntu distro Linux

screenshot

Kubuntuis an official derivative of the Ubuntu Linux distribution using the KDE graphical environment instead of GNOME.

It is part of the Ubuntu project and uses the same underlying system. Kubuntu and Ubuntu can work alongside each other by installing the ubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-desktop packages.
/p> Every package in Kubuntu shares the same repositories as Ubuntu.
Kubuntu CDs can be ordered through the Shipit service.
It is released regularly and predictably.

A regular installation of Ubuntu will have the GNOME desktop, GNOME applications (e.g. Evolution) and GNOME/GTK+ admin tools (e.g. Synaptic Package Manager).

A regular installation of Ubuntu will have the GNOME desktop, GNOME applications (e.g. Evolution) and GNOME/GTK+ admin tools (e.g. Synaptic Package Manager).
A regular installation of Kubuntu has the KDE desktop, KDE applications (e.g. Kontact) and KDE/Qt admin tools (e.g. Adept Manager).

In addition, Kubuntu is more likely to use packages from the KDE/Qt project rather than GTK+ toolkit-based applications such as Mozilla Firefox.

However, these are simply the default packages.
For example, one may install Ubuntu and then add KDE, or even install the kubuntu 'metapackage'.
Therefore, one need not be restricted to one set of applications, but can mix and match by preference.

There is a slight disadvantage to doing so, namely the increased diskspace and memory requirements of running both Qt and GTK, however this is negligible on a modern computer.

Kubuntu follows the same naming/versioning system as Ubuntu, with each release having a code name, and a version number based on the year and month of release.
Canonical provides support and security updates for most Kubuntu versions for 18 months after release.
Both Desktop CDs and Alternative (installation) CDs for x86 and AMD64 platforms are available.

You say free, but the CDs/bandwidth cost money!

You might be asking: If the software is free, then why do I have to pay a vendor for a CD, or pay an ISP for downloading?

When buying a CD, you are paying for someone's time, capital outlay to make the disks, and risk (in case they don't sell them all). In other words, you are paying for a physical medium used to deliver the software, not for the software itself.

When we use the word "free", we are referring to software freedom, not that it's without cost. You can read more on what we mean by "free software" and what the Free Software Foundation says on that subject.

Most software costs over 100 US dollars. How can you give it away?

A better question is how do software companies get away with charging so much? Software is not like making a car. Once you've made one copy of your software, the production costs to make a million more are tiny (there's a good reason Microsoft has so many billions in the bank).

Look at it another way: if you had an endless supply of sand in your backyard, you might be willing to give sand away. It would be foolish, though, to pay for a truck to take it to others. You would make them come and get it themselves (equivalent to downloading off the net) or they can pay someone else to deliver it to their door (equivalent to buying a CD). This is exactly how Debian operates and why most of the CDs/DVDs are so cheap (only about 12 USD for 4 DVDs).

Debian does not make any money from the sale of CDs. At the same time, money is needed to pay for expenses such as domain registration and hardware. Thus, we ask that you buy from one of the CD vendors that donates a portion of your purchase to Debian.

What hardware is supported?

Debian will run on almost all personal computers, including most older models. Each new release of Debian generally supports a larger number of computer architectures. For a complete list of currently supported ones, see the documentation for the stable release.

Almost all common hardware is supported. If you would like to be sure that all the devices connected to your machine are supported, check out the Linux Hardware Compatibility HOWTO.

There are a few companies that make support difficult by not releasing specifications for their hardware. This means you might not be able to use their hardware with GNU/Linux. Some companies provide non-free drivers, but that is a problem because the company could later go out of business or stop support for the hardware you have. We recommend that you only purchase hardware from manufacturers that provide free drivers for their products.

What is Debian?

The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system. This operating system that we have created is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short.

An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. At the core of an operating system is the kernel. The kernel is the most fundamental program on the computer and does all the basic housekeeping and lets you start other programs.

Debian systems currently use the Linux kernel. Linux is a piece of software started by Linus Torvalds and supported by thousands of programmers worldwide.

However, work is in progress to provide Debian for other kernels, primarily for the Hurd. The Hurd is a collection of servers that run on top of a microkernel (such as Mach) to implement different features. The Hurd is free software produced by the GNU project.

A large part of the basic tools that fill out the operating system come from the GNU project; hence the names: GNU/Linux and GNU/Hurd. These tools are also free.

Of course, the thing that people want is application software: programs to help them get what they want to do done, from editing documents to running a business to playing games to writing more software. Debian comes with over 18733 packages (precompiled software that is bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine) — all of it free.

It's a bit like a tower. At the base is the kernel. On top of that are all the basic tools. Next is all the software that you run on the computer. At the top of the tower is Debian — carefully organizing and fitting everything so it all works together.

It's all free?

You may be wondering: why would people spend hours of their own time to write software, carefully package it, and then give it all away? The answers are as varied as the people who contribute. Some people like to help others. Many write programs to learn more about computers. More and more people are looking for ways to avoid the inflated price of software. A growing crowd contribute as a thank you for all the great free software they've received from others. Many in academia create free software to help get the results of their research into wider use. Businesses help maintain free software so they can have a say in how it develops -- there's no quicker way to get a new feature than to implement it yourself! Of course, a lot of us just find it great fun.

Debian is so committed to free software that we thought it would be useful if that commitment was formalized in a written document. Thus, our Social Contract was born.

Although Debian believes in free software, there are cases where people want or need to put non-free software on their machine. Whenever possible Debian will support this. There are even a growing number of packages whose sole job is to install non-free software into a Debian system.
