How to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 to a USB Hard Drive - install linux di flashdisk

It is possible to install Ubuntu 8.04.1 to a 4GB+ flash drive using this method as we did, however, due to the additional read/write cycles that occur on a full blown install, the life of your flash drive may be slightly reduced. This simple tutorial utilizes the Install script that is included with Ubuntu 8.04.1 making it easy to run and test the latest offering of Ubuntu without installing to a fixed internal system disk.
This is a full installation of Ubuntu and will act just like an installation to a internal hard drive. All changes are saved in real time and the system can be fully updated and edited.

Basic essentials for installing Ubuntu 8.04.1 to USB:

* Ubuntu 8.04.1 ISO
* CD Reader/Burner
* 4GB+ USB Device

#1 First, Backup any data you wish to save from your USB device

#2 Download Ubuntu 8.04.1 and burn the ISO to a CD

#3 Important: Physically disconnect ALL internal hard drives before booting from the CD and performing the install. this will eliminate the possibility of installing to the wrong device and overwriting your MBR. Reattach the drives after completing this tutorial.

#4 Restart your PC, and proceed to boot from the Ubuntu CD

#5 From the Boot Menu, select the option to Install Ubuntu:

#6. Once Ubuntu has booted, you should be presented with an installation menu:

#7.Proceed forward answering all questions until you reach the Prepare disk space section. (1) Click the Guided - use entire disk radio option and then (2) Click the Forward button:

#8. On the next Who are you? page, create your user profile, then Click the Forward button:

#9.On the Ready to install page, Click the (1) Advanced button and (2) select your device from the dropdown list. Example: /dev/sda, then (3) Click Install:

#10.The installer will now proceed to install Ubuntu on the USB device. Once it has finished, Click the option to Restart now:

#11.Remove the CD when prompted and proceed to reboot. Don't forget to change your System Boot Menu or BIOS to boot from the USB device.

How to Change the Login Screen on Ubuntu

The login screen on an operating system is the part at the beginning of the start up process where you type your username and password. The screen is very generic in Ubuntu and doesn't have any special features. The image is generic and the not much to look at - it is part of the strict
brown theme that is present with all Ubuntu installations. It works for some people who desire a minimalistic approach to their work station. For the eye candy lovers, however, it is sorely disappointing.

You can, as with any Linux distro, change the Ubuntu login screen to anything you wish. You will need to create your own or download one created and uploaded to the web by someone else, whichever is better for you. A good place to look for login screens is gnome-look.org. This site is catered to the gnome/Ubuntu community and is a place where anyone can upload their own login screens, as well as a wide array of other features for the Linux distro.

If you want to change the Ubuntu login screen and you're not sure how to precede, follow the next simple steps to get started.

Items Needed:

Ubuntu installation
Login screen download

Step 1:

You first need to download and install the login screen that you want to add. Search the web for viable options. The site I mentioned above is a good place to look. Read the comments before downloading to make sure the it hasn't crashed previous downloader's computers.

Download the tar.gz file - don't run it or display it. Just save it to an easy to access location such as the Desktop.

Step 2:

Now you need to open the Login Manager in Ubuntu. This is a pre-installed application that is available in all Ubuntu operating systems. You can access it by navigating to System > Administration > Login Manager. It will open with several different options for login screens, some of which may or not work for your needs.

Step 3:

Now drag the tar.gz login screen and drag it over the open application. It will ask you if you want to install. Choose yes. Now, choose the first login screen that it shows as optional. It may not state the name of the one you want, but the first one will be the one you installed.

Instalasi OpenSUSE Menggunakan CD/DVD

How to Install Mandriva Linux

By David Secor,

Things You’ll Need:

* Mandriva ISO image
* CD burner
* Blank CD
* Free hard disk spac

Over the last several years, many Linux developers have worked diligently to make a desktop version of Linux that is as easy to use as competing operating systems. Mandriva Linux is one of the distributions that is aimed at the novice computer user, though it also includes features that those with more experience will enjoy. Like most Linux distributions, Mandriva is free to download, and with the Live CD version called Mandriva One, you can even try the operating system out before committing to a full installation.

Instructions

STEP 1

Download the latest version of Mandriva One from Mandriva’s home page. If a broadband connection is not available, the Mandriva store also has CDs available to order.

STEP 2

Burn the Mandriva One image to disc. The image is in the standard ISO format, which can be easily burned to CD with most CD burning software or with one of the many freeware ISO utilities available on the internet.

STEP 3

Backup any important files that are located on the target machine. There is always a small chance that something could go wrong while installing an operating system, so it pays to have such files in a safe place.

STEP 4

Insert the Mandriva CD, and reboot the machine. Many computers are set to automatically boot from the CD-Rom Drive, if a bootable disc is inserted. Should the computer not boot the Mandriva CD, it will be necessary to enter the BIOS of the computer, and change the boot priority, so that the CD boots before the hard drive. This can be done by pressing a special key, usually “DEL,” “F2,” or “F12,” just after the machine starts.

STEP 5

Press “Enter” when the CD offers the option of booting Mandriva. After a minute, the desktop will appear, and the software will ask you to choose your language and the country you reside in. Then it will ask you to accept the license agreement, choose the keyboard layout, and it will ask you how to set the clock. Most users can leave the clock set at the default option, which is “Local Time.” Finally, the software will ask if you would like to use 3D effects on your desktop. For compatibility reasons, it is best to leave the default option of no effects, and they can be turned on later, if desired. In a moment, the Mandriva desktop will appear, and you can explore the interface and use the software before starting the install process.

STEP 6

Double-click the icon labeled “Live Install.” Click the “Next” button on the welcome screen. The Drak partition wizard will be started, and it will scan your hard drive to determine the best installation options.

STEP 7

Choose how you would like to partition the drive. If you will be using only Mandriva, and your files are backed up, you can select the option labeled “Erase and Use Entire Disk.” If you will be booting Windows in addition to Mandriva, you could use the option to resize the Windows partition. In addition, you can choose to make the partitions yourself, by selecting the “Custom” option, though this should only be used by experienced computer users. After choosing the partition options, the installation will begin. It will take several minutes to an hour to complete. At the end, it will display a configuration window for the boot loader.

STEP 8

Select which boot loader to use, and to which partition it should be installed. In most cases, the default options can be used, because Mandriva typically finds the correct configuration without user input. Click the “Next” button, and then the “Finish” button in the next window.

STEP 9

Reboot the computer by selecting “Log Off” and then “Restart” from the Menu at the bottom left of the screen. After a few moments, the software will ask you to remove the CD and press “Enter.” Mandriva will then be run for the first time. Answer the questions about your internet connection, choose an administrator password, and select a user name. Log on by typing your user name and password, followed by the “Enter” key. Once the desktop comes up, the installation of Mandriva Linux is completed.

You change the username and password, but i suggest use default username & password.thanks.
username : root
password : root

Minimal openSUSE 11.1 install

Installation
openSUSE 11.1 is Out - Get it Now!free download

Boot to the DVD and choose to install from the menu. You can press F2 and select an alternate language if required. The system will boot straight into the installer, where you should begin your 'New Installation'. I chose to use the automatic configuration option and proceeded to set my time zone. At the 'Desktop Selection' screen hit the 'Other' button and choose either 'Minimal X Window', or 'Minimal

Server Selection (Text Mode)'. The first option will install the base system, plus the X Window server and the basic desktop environment, Tab Window Manager (TWM). If you want less control then take this one, but if you want more, then take the second text-mode option.

openSUSE 11.1 installer - choosing a desktop

Partition your hard drives however you desire - I like to turn off access time and so select 'No access time' on a per-partition basis. Create a user (I turn off automatic login), complete the rest of the setup procedure and begin the install. If you took the second option, then at the summary screen ensure you change the default run level from 3 to 5 (full multi-user with network and display manager). This entire install process took only 6 minutes to complete and a further 2 minutes to configure the system on first boot. If you took the first option, then by default it will boot straight to the X Window desktop manager and the basic TWM desktop. You can log into this environment as root or switch to a terminal if you prefer. Unlike Ubuntu, the base openSUSE system includes a fully functional splash screen and includes many services, such as D-Bus, HAL, Firewall, CPUFreq, NFS, CUPS, OpenSSH and Postfix out of the box. It also includes YaST and all the modules for configuring your system. Next we can begin to tweak the system.

Base system

Now that you have a basic X Window system installed (if you don't yet, you will shortly), we can use the Internet to download the latest packages. Any packages that have been updated since the initial release will be installed from the Internet, while anything else will be installed from the local DVD. By default the openSUSE installer will have configured your repositories for you; however, you can use a custom mirror if you like. To accomplish this, I use Zypper, openSUSE's powerful RPM package management tool.

Reboot your computer and you should be greeted with the openSUSE GNOME Desktop Manager. Log in as the user you set up during installation and it should load the GNOME desktop.

Now that you have a fully functioning GNOME environment, you can continue to install any other applications you require and tweak your system further. The pattern we used has pulled in many of the basic packages we need, including a web browser, email and calendar program, chat client, CD burner and an image viewer. If you didn't use the pattern, then you'll need to install the packages you want manually. There are many other ways to tweak your system further of course, now that it is installed. Try disabling unused services, removing programs you don't need and introducing some package locks.

This new custom openSUSE system boots from GRUB to login screen in around 28 seconds, taking a further 6 seconds to load the GNOME desktop. It is using up 175 MB of memory once fully logged in and just over 1.7 GB of hard drive space. Compare this to the default install, which takes 39 seconds to boot and over 10 seconds to load the desktop, while using up 3.6 GB of hard drive space and over 315 MB of me

Conclusion

If you want a really light weight environment then openSUSE might not be the way to go, but if it's your favourite operating system, you don't have to give it up just yet! You can tweak the system to make it quite small, especially with the help of Zypper and its ability to lock packages. At the very least, you will learn some more about how your openSUSE system works and, if at the end you decide to just install everything, well, you can do that too!

How to Install Ubuntu 8.10 via USB Flash Drive

It is a lot more secure and stable as compared to previous releases of Ubuntu. What I personally liked so far is the new ‘Carry on a USB’ feature which lets you download and install Ubuntu via a USB flash drive instead of burning it to a CD.

Here I have a little tutorial on how to install Ubuntu 8.10 via USB Flash Drive. I used the same tutorial to install Ubuntu on my Acer laptop without writing or burning it to a CD.

All you will be requiring is the Ubuntu 8.10 ISO which can be downloaded from http://ubuntu.com/ and a USB flash drive with at least 1GB of memory.

Here is what you need to do.

1. Connect your USB flash drive to your PC and format it in FAT32 by right clicking it and selecting format.

2. Download the Ubuntu 8.10 conversion script and execute it. A folder named Ubuntu810 shall be created.

3. Place the Ubuntu 8.10 ISO in the Ubuntu810 folder.

4. Select and run the Ubuntu810.bat file inside the Ubuntu810 folder and follow the onsreen instructions.

5. Once the script has finished, restart your PC and set your BIOS or Boot Menu to boot from the USB device, save your changes and reboot.

If everything goes well, you should now be able to test the LiveCD version of Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex and even install it. This method is non-persistent so it won’t save any changes you make while running Ubuntu in the LiveCD mode.

Thanks to PendriveLinux for the tutorial.

* Pilih menu install ubuntu klik enter.

1. Apabila anda ingin tetap memakai OS yang ada sekarang, misalnya ingin dual boot dengan Windows XP, maka pilih option pertama, yaitu “Guided - resize the partition and use the freed space”.

Click the ‘Install’ button NOW!

Selamat Mencoba.
